There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. | 1:1-2
Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East. | 1:3
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. | 1:6
And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So, Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” | 1:7
Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” | 1:8
Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. | 1:10
Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. | 1:11-12
and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!” Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. | 1:19-20
And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.” | 1:21
In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong. | 1:22
But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.” | 2:5-6
So, Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. | 2:7-8
Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” | 2:9
But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. | 2:10
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place–Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him. | 2:11
After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. | 3:1
For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. | 3:25
“Remember now, whoever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright ever cut off? | 4:7
The old lion perishes for lack of prey, And the cubs of the lioness are scattered. | 4:11
They die, even without wisdom.’ | 4:21
For wrath kills a foolish man, and envy slays a simple one. | 5:2
“But as for me, I would seek God, And to God I would commit my cause– | 5:8
“Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore, do not despise the chastening of the Almighty. | 5:17
For He bruises, but He binds up; He wounds, but His hands make whole. | 5:18
Can flavorless food be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? | 6:6
“Is there not a time of hard service for man on earth? Are not his days also like the days of a hired man? | 7:1
Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly. | 8:7
For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow. | 8:7
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered? | 9:4
He removes the mountains, and they do not know When He overturns them in His anger; He shakes the earth out of its place, And its pillars tremble; He commands the sun, and it does not rise; He seals off the stars; He alone spreads out the heavens, And treads on the waves of the sea; | 9:5-8
In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind? | 12:10
Wisdom is with aged men, and with length of days, understanding. | 12:12
He makes nations great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them. | 12:23
He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings. | 18:19
For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; | 19:25
Be afraid of the sword for yourselves; For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, that you may know there is a judgment.” | 19:29
Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver; | 22:25
He will even deliver one who is not innocent; Yes, he will be delivered by the purity of your hands.” | 22:30
How then can man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman? | 25:4
He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. | 26:7
He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it. | 26:8
Far be it from me That I should say you are right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 27:5
For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heavens, | 28:24
And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.’ “ | 28:28
The young men saw me and hid, And the aged arose and stood; | 29:8
“I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman? | 31:1
“If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or if I have lurked at my neighbour’s door, Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down over her. | 31:9-10
I said, ‘Age should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.’ | 32:7
Great men are not always wise, nor do the aged always understand justice. | 32:9
The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. | 33:4
For He repays man according to his work, and makes man to find a reward according to his way. | 34:11
“For His eyes are on the ways of man, And He sees all his steps. | 34:21
So that they caused the cry of the poor to come to Him; For He hears the cry of the afflicted. | 34:28
There they cry out, but He does not answer, Because of the pride of evil men. | 35:12
But if they do not obey, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge. | 36:12
“Behold, God is exalted by His power; Who teaches like Him? | 36:22
“Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him; Nor can the number of His years be discovered. | 36:26
Therefore, men fear Him; He shows no partiality to any who are wise of heart.” | 37:24
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. | 38:4
To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, | 38:6
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? | 38:7
Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine. | 41:11
Then Job answered the Lord and said: “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. | 42:1-2
for the Lord had accepted Job. | 42:9
And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed, the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. | 42:10
Now the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. | 42:12
He also had seven sons and three daughters. And he called the name of the first Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-Happuch. | 42:13-14
In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. | 42:15
After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. | 42:16
